Vienna International Airport has received an award from the Airport Council International for its photovoltaic system, among other things. It finished second behind Gatwick Airport.
The award was presented at the ACI Annual General Meeting on June 27, 2023 in Barcelona. “Climate protection and sustainability are important corporate goals at FWAG. Since the beginning of 2023, Vienna Airport has been operating in a CO2-neutral manner. With its 24-hectare photovoltaic system, Vienna Airport has not only created an Austrian showcase project, but also set international benchmarks. We are consistently continuing our climate protection offensive. « With the doubling of our PV capacities currently under construction, we will obtain around 50% of the electricity we need from solar energy in the future, » say the board members of Flughafen Wien AG, Julian Jäger and Günther Ofner.
Vienna Airport has been pursuing its climate protection strategy since 2011 and has successfully implemented numerous measures. The airport operates Austria’s largest photovoltaic system and relies on e-mobility, geothermal energy, intelligent building management and much more. The expansion of airport solar power production from 24 to around 45 hectares is already under construction. This means that around 50% of the airport’s electricity needs will be self-produced in the future. The next sustainability goal has already been set: Vienna Airport plans to reduce its CO2 emissions from operations to net zero by 2033.
