Wizz Air will expand its flight network in Macedonia after receiving government subsidies to launch new routes. This funding is intended to strengthen tourism and Macedonia’s international connections.
The Hungarian low-cost airline announced that it would set up connections from Skopje to Barcelona, Lyon and Stuttgart, as well as a new route from Ohrid to Basel. Wizz Air’s managing director, Jozsef Varadi, stressed that despite the restrictions imposed by engine checks, the airline wants to resume long-term growth aircraft and frequency and route cancellations from 2025.
The Macedonian state has allocated around $6.3 million in subsidies for new routes for 2025-2027 to increase the annual number of passengers at Skopje and Ohrid airports by 200,000. In addition to Wizz Air, Flydubai and Turkish Airlines are also planning new routes to Macedonia, which should further revitalize the location. Wizz Air also sees potential for expansion beyond Europe, but is limited by existing air transport agreements that only allow unlimited flights within the EU.
