Low-cost airline Wizz Air has taken a £5m stake in SAF maker Firefly. This will be used to finance flight operations in the United Kingdom from 2028. The so-called sustainable fuel is to be produced from sewage treatment plant sludge, among other things.

Firefly relies on a specialized process that converts sewage sludge, a plentiful, low-value waste product, into SAF. In the UK, more than 57 million tonnes of sewage sludge could be produced annually, from which 250,000 tonnes of SAF are produced.

The agreement with Firefly and the investment in the new SAF technology is the latest milestone in Wizz Air’s broader sustainability strategy, which also includes the ambitious plan for fleet renewal and already efficient, low-cost operations with aircraft of the latest technology and high seat density and occupancy. This will further strengthen Wizz Air’s position as an industry leader in sustainability and strengthen the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions per passenger/km by 25% by 2030.
